Had a chance to meet Arron Tippin at DelGrosso's Park in Tippton PA. I made a couple of copies, giving one to Arron and keeping the signed one. I think he liked it. When i was getting the marker back from him, I accidentally grabbed the caricature i had for him. He said "wait a second, that's mine!" His reaction when he first saw it was good and the steel guitar player came over before i met Aaron and said he would love it.

A little Lady Ga Ga. Emphases on the "little". Not much of a lady. Took about three hours from rough to finish. I think i could have more fun pulling out more details in her hair and using a few more layers to make it look more realistic, but I didn't want to spend more time on it.

A weedin and a caricature

Seems like this summer is going to a busy summer for weddings. I have a lot more than usual, or at least it seems. Maybe it is because the weather is still cool and i have already played three weddings.
Yesterday I was at the Shaver's Greek Fire Hall, (fire hall is a Pennsylvania place for Wedding Receptions, ha!). Got there at 3 and started music at 4. It was the wedding of Amanda Kipphan and Todd Brown. They went to Vegas and got married. Had the reception last night. It was a good time, even though i was a little tired. Had a late night the day before and an early morning.
Started looking at the faces and picking one out to get a warm up caricature done and as I played the music during dinner I knocked out one or two roughs. As the different traditional elements of the wedding reception took place I did a few more drawing. I will post them here, although I did not get pictures of all of them.
I did these just for fun and do not have pics of the subjects. Sorry
About the caricatures. The top one of the man holding the beer was a fun drawing. Later i was told that within the last few weeks this man had open heart surgery, so after the drawing was given to him, I had a good conversation and we shared stories about both being under the knife.
The second drawing I did when i saw this guy come in. I think i started it before he sat down. When i first looked at him, I thought it looked like his forehead sloped back and i tried to capture that. He had a pretty heavy tone to his face where he had shaved and shaved his head. I tried to pick that up with a blue color over the peach. The flash when I took the picture kind of washed that out.
I think the next two were brothers. I did them because they were in line of site. The man with the glasses had his son along and had ask me to draw him. They left before i had the chance to do so. The man without glasses had some writing on his hat but i was not able to see it. I took artistic license and substituted it.
The next picture of the girl with braces ask me to do one of her and because i was still DJing, I said the only way she could get one was if she danced the whole time. She did, but I don't think she was thrilled about it. I tried to reflect that in the drawing.
The last one, was the last one. It was almost 11:30 and i was beat, but i just caught a glimpse and went for it. Again the colors are washed out a bit because of the flash, as all the pictures are, but i was happy with the drawing.

After seeing Hines on Dancing with the Stars. I thought he might look good in a ballet skirt. I went back and tightened up some of the drawing and added that skirt here. Although I am sure he is a tough man, I am pretty sure he will get at least a little harassment in the locker room.

Here is the project i did for the Fullington Bus Company in state college. You can see it if you happen to travel to or from State College by bus. I took a few pictures of it.
As you can see in the pictures, it is secured by three concrete blocks and is also chained to the steel rails. It must be worth big money for that to happen, right?

Someone suggested I make caricatures available though my website and Facebook. So here it is. If you are interested I even set up a pay pal account for you to pay for them. I will do them from photos that you provide. I do have to reserve the right to say "hey that is not a good enough picture", and return your money. When it is complete I will send you by email a small picture of it. We can then make arrangements for it to be picked up or sent to you. Umm, you will have to pick up the postage. I love to draw these things and hope you find they look like the person you want me to draw, but understand they are to be a little funny. I hope Max didn't mind but as I thought about making this post, I saw it was his birthday so I used him as a subject and as a sample here.
The paper that i use is 11x14 for individuals and 14x17 for 3 or more faces. I have paypal set up for 1 to 4 faces but have done more. If you want more thank four faces, just pay through paypal a second time for the additional faces.
This is the first time I have tried this so we will see how it flies. I hope to post some of the pictures as I do them and THANKS!

He was to talk to the kids at that school on 02/26/10, but because of the nasty weather the event was canceled. He is to come to the school another time. This is Amber Dougherty. I became aware of her story from a news story on a local radio station. This is it: Amber Dougherty is a 13 year old from Tyrone, PA and is suffering from Severe Intractable Epilepsy, with a sadly grim prognosis. According to an email sent by a family member, the doctors don't expect for her to be with us next Christmas. Since Amber likes to receive mail, her family is organizing a card drive so that Amber can get mail from all over. I posted on her facebook that I was praying for her and someone emailed me and said i should do a caricature of her. This was a pretty quick painting. I did it all in one evening. Spent about three hours on it. I actually had a lot of it done and something very strange happened. My MAC crashed. I have had it for several years and it may have crashed five times since i had it. Anyhow i had to redraw it but that is ok.
I am not sure how Amber will fell about it. I only did it because someone on her facebook page ask me to. If you would like to see a reference i would rather you visit her on facebook.

Weekend Roundup

I thought I would post a bunch of stuff that i did over the past four or five days, so i guess that makes it more than a weekend roundup. So I digress.
First pictures from Thursday @ the County Line Karaoke/Dance night. The crowds there have been very good. We spend the first few hours doing karaoke and then kick into some dance music. This week not only karaoke and dancing, but the Penguins on the big screen. As you can see in one of the pictures posted, I even allowed my dolly to be used as a dance partner. I've never thought of it being used in that way, but now i do.

Friday night the Mount Union V.F.W. had comedians for the first time in a long time. I guess back in the 70's , when gas was 40 cents a gallon and all, they had comedians. So Friday night was fun. I love comedy and had the pleasure of meeting for the first time Wes Zaharuk. A comedian from Canada. He put on a great show and you can see some of his work at his web site.
There were a lot of new people at the V.F.W. that usually don't get there for karaoke. After the comedians we finished the night with dancing. I hope we have the chance to see more comedy acts travel through this neck of the woods. It is something different and FUN!

Saturday I played music for Mr. And Mrs. Matt Lemin. Roughly 265 people under one tent on a beautiful day on a beautiful farm, near Raystown Lake. The day was really beautiful and my friend and I were ready for a Par Tay. One problem as soon as the sun dropped over the mountain. IT GOT COLD!! Really cold, and the majority of people went into the garage, not where i was close to be setting up, or home. We did manage to keep a few people warm by dancing. Hung out until midnight and then headed home.

Sunday it was the 6th annual Dustin, Bigger and Better Family Picinic. This is the first year I actually got to go and be there when other people were there. For the past five years I have kinda showed up when people were leaving. It was a beautiful day, a lot fo people and I managged to get out without getting wet. The kids were throwing enough water to make Noah's ark float. I got to see some people I haven't seen in a long time. I got to meet some people I didn't know. I did do a couple of caricatures, but didn't get to take any pictures. I spent several hours out there (Raystown Lake), went home and got my motorcycle then road back. It was very close to dark when i got home, but not quite, becuase then I would have been riding my motorcycle illegally, being that i only have a permit, for now.

So there you go, the last few days. I am not sure when i can make anothere post. I actually have my first commision job as a caricature artist to work on. I don't want to say who or what it is yet, well I do want to say but I can't yet. I also have a web site to work on and a caricature to work on for the Second Mile program. So now, off to work!

I have been working a lot on the caricature side. I have also been doing a little karaoke work here and there. I haven't posted much about it, but did get a picture that i wanted to share. Another photo I wanted to share was at my sister Heather's wedding. I am not sure of who it is but thought it was great. He was getting ready for the guarder toss. Believe it or not, after being that prepared, he missed it.

Art Instutute Newsletter

Every so often I get a newsletter from the college I attended. The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I see a lot of great work from graduates. I think to myself one day, one day I will have something there. Not that I need it for an ego boost. I just believe it would be cool. Well that day has arrived! I finaly made it. Dave DiBella was retiring. Dave lived across the street from me when i was attending school. I could not make the retirement party so I did a caricature of him and e mailed it to the people organizing the party as ou can see in the photo, it was displayed very nicely at the event. It is in 3 of the 7 photos in the newsletter. It has its very own picture and i could not be happier about it! There is only one problem. A small one. No where does it mention who did the caricature. Haha, just my luck. And it is ok. I am tickled that it made it and he liked it. Dave is a great guy and did e mail me his appreciation for the caricature.

I am headed to see Brad Sherwood and Colin Mochrie tonight. They are from the show Whose Line is it Anyway. Comedians who make it up as they go. Improv and i love it. For the final skit they take off the shoes and place 500 or so mouse traps on the floor. Then they put blind fold on and do a skit. Fun stuff. I thought it would be cool if Colin were to place a bear trap in place of a mouse trap. Below you will see my version of that thought. I had to hurry a bit on the background but i wanted to print this and try to get a copy to the tonight. My seats are third row so it should be a blast.

V.F.W Contest

This is an old friend. His name Frank. I got to know him through a band he played in called Blaz-On. I kind of remember the logo that they used, but wasn't a hundred percent so i put him in the t-shirt of another band that I am sure he knows. I did that just for comedic value. Not sure if anyone is laughing. I like the drawing. It took me close to two hours, which I was happy with, but there are some areas I would like to work on. It is after 1 am now though so i am going to think about it in the morning.

This lesson what about getting under the skin and thinking about the bone structure of a person you are caricaturing. So we were ask to do a drawing of the subject then the skull beneath. And while typing that, in my head, i said the word skull with a real scary voice. Just so you know. :-)

Ok, most everything i have been posting has been about caricature, which you may know i love to do. The whole art thing is a passion, but i do have this other side of life which involves music and karaoke. I thought i should put some of that here. I like to post pictures with this stuff. You know a picture is worth a thousand words, and it saves me from typing. A disclaimer. The first picture is of a caricature i did and the woman holding it is of whom the caricature is. It was done at a place called Memories. If you live in the the Huntingdon area, you probably know it. She was there celebrating her birthday. After i did this caricature i did one of about 5 guys, but do not have a photo> I actually don't like to do more than one person per page, i think it is harder to do and they don't look as good, but hey, i did it.
So on to the next picture! I may have posted this before but i am not sure. This is a caricature i did of a man that lives in Hooters State College. Everytime i go there, he is there sitting at the bar. Not that there is anything wrong with that! In fact maybe we both show up there at the same time each time i go, and he thinks i am weird and always there. Maybe he has a blog posted somewhere and did a drawing of me, and says the same thing about me. But maybe not.
Next picture!! I know this has not been much about music or karaoke. Just be patient. Wednesday nights at the Village Tavern in Mill Creek have been growing. It is an early night. I start around 8, so if you plan on stopping over, get there early. This picture and the next couple were taken there. It is a lot of fun and i have been getting to meet new people almost weekly. That is the best part of doing karaoke and DJ work. I know you thought it was the fancy cars and exotic places i get to play.
Ok here are a few pictures from a job i did on a Saturday afternoon. I don't know if there is an explanation for these,I really don't want to try to explain them. Just look and try to enjoy. The names are being withheld to protect the poor fashion. You can't see it in the picture but the man in the blue is blindfolded. He was told since it was his birthday he would be king. He would have lovely ladies dance for him while blindfolded. The people at the party would decide who would be his fair maiden. I thought i took pictures of all three but it looks like i missed one. The young (coough) lady (cough again!) in the blue was the winner and the King and his new maiden had a lovely dance to the still popular song by Marvin Gaye, Sexual Healing.
After the birthday party was over, I headed to the Mapleton Legion, Post 233 I think. It was packed when i got there. A cash party does that. I have three pictures to post for this, just because it is funny how it happened. So the dancing started. That will be the first shot. The second shot you can see there was more movement in the dancing. When the young ladies saw i was taking pictures they were kind enough to pose for me, but as you can see the camera did not do its job on focusing, so as quick as i could i pressed the zoom button and without hesitating and without trying (I SWEAR!) I snapped anouther picture which is posted here and a picture i probably could not have taken if i tried. I cleared the posting of the pictures so i am safe. I had a good time at the Legion and will be back at the beginning of next month. Hopefully it will be just as fun.
